What is Movember?
Movember is the global health initiative dedicated to changing the face of men’s health- all through the power of the moustache.
On the 1st of every Movember (the month formerly known as November), thousands of men around the world shave clean and commit to a 30-day moustache-growing experience. With their Movember Mo’s- slang for moustache- participants raise vital awareness and funds to address men’s health issues, specifically cancers affecting men.
Movember participants, or Mo Bros, as we like to call them, become walking, talking billboards for the men’s health movement. Every time someone asks, “Why the moustache?” Mo Bros have the opportunity to talk about the health risks that men face, and how to more proactively manage those risks.
The moustache is our ribbon, a symbol for the men’s health cause and the means by which we raise awareness and funds. It is fun, and funny, to grow, and therein lies its power. By linking a good time to a serious cause, Movember takes a unique approach to raising critical funds and awareness to support men’s health issues.
We are often asked, “Are women a part of the movement?” and the answer is a resounding “Yes!” The thousands of Mo Sistas who participate in Movember every year are vital to each campaign’s success. They share the same responsibilities as Mo Bros, spreading awareness of men’s health issues, recruiting new Mo Bros and Mo Sistas into the Movember community, and exercising their creativity by putting together fundraising and awareness events.
Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raise funds in the same manner as a runner in a charity race, collecting donations from friends and family to support their 30-day Movember moustache-growing journey.
Why Men’s Health?
1 in 2 men (and 1 in 3 women) will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, roughly 218,000 cases this year alone. Men are 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than women are to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Despite these startling statistics, men often avoid visiting their doctor or communicating concerns about their health. This approach denies them the chance of early detection and effective treatment of many common diseases, including one-third of all cancers. Movember raises awareness around the health risks that men face, and removes the stigmas that discourage them from proactively managing their health.
Movember’s 2010 Success
In 2010, U.S. registrations shot up 132%, with 64,919 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raising over $7.2 million for our beneficiary partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation & LIVESTRONG.
Globally, over 450,000 people registered at movember.com, bringing in over $70 million in total donations. In just seven short years, over one million international Mo Bros and Mo Sistas have raised over $170 million for Movember’s global beneficiary partners.
Equally important to these fundraising achievements, Movember has introduced countless men and women around the world to the issue of men’s health, bringing it progressively further into the public consciousness with each new campaign.
