Aside from asking what Imerman Angels is, you might be wondering who the Imerman Angels are – the answer is simple.Imerman Angels are cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers that create a tight knit community of support.

The mission is to provide personalized connections that enable one-on-one support among cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers.

Jonny Imerman , diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 26, began working towards this mission in 2003. Regardless of the high level of support Jonny received from friends and family, he felt the need to connect with someone who could relate to his battle. “What if every cancer fighter could talk to a cancer survivor, who not only had beaten the same type of cancer, but who also was the same age and gender as the fighter? The cancer survivor would be an angel; walking, living proof that the fighter could win too.” This thought process spurred Jonny to begin compiling a network of individuals who were looking for the same type of support.

Imerman Angels was granted 501c3 status in 2005 and has continued to grow significantly in the years following. The organization is proud to have facilitated over 1300 matches in 2010 and over 4,000 matches since the beginning!

Through it’s comprehensive matching process, Imerman Angels partners anyone seeking cancer support with a “Mentor Angel,” someone who is uniquely familiar with their situation. These connections allow the opportunity to ask personal questions, providing someone who can relate and who is sensitive to the experience and the situation. The personalized matching process is conducted by a staff of connection specialists, themselves all cancer survivors. The whole process is absolutely free and helps anyone touched by any type of cancer, at any cancer stage level, at any age, living anywhere in the world.

Through events and programs, Imerman Angels aims to spread awareness about 1-on-1 peer support, in order to actively reach as many cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers as possible. 2010 was a busy year of bustling events, a record-sized Imerman Active Marathon and Half Marathon team, and exciting new social media campaigns, among other milestones.

So the next time you think “Who are the Imerman Angels?” just think that you could be one too!
