“ Shine as much light on the problem and try to go from fear to love throughout the hurdles you will have to face along the way.
Joshua Dawson is the “wish-granting” mAss Kicker. At 30 years-old, he sold his first business to Canada’s largest travel company. After his father passed away from cancer, he found a creative new way to literally grant wishes to people who help others. It has lead him to many great adventures from race car driving to fighter jet flying to speaking at TEDX. Joshua is always on the move. We were very fortunate to catch up with him and ask him a few questions.
mK: Thanks for doing this Josh! What is your relationship to tumors/cancer:
mK: Why did you create the Genie?
JD: After my father passed, I started looking at the world in a much different way. I was no longer concerned with collecting things and trying to get rich with the white picket fence. None of that made much sense to me anymore. I was looking for a way to make a difference and was blessed with the Genie idea one day sitting in a lazyboy. I still don’t understand why the Genie but here I am almost 5 years later after granting over 1 million worth of wishes in over 70 cities across North America feeling closer to my father’s spirit than ever.
mK: Very cool! What motivates you?
JD: Exciting people, putting smiles on their faces and love in their heart.
mK: Who is your personal hero or are your heroes?
JD: My number #1 inspiration today is my mother. She has always been there for me when no one else believed and is my anchor. My number 2 inspiration is spiderman.
mK: HAHAHA! What makes you laugh, cry, angry?
JD: Hmmm…nice question. Inspirational movies do all the above. In fact I love doing all three at different times, with laugh being my favorite obviously.
mK: What would you say is the most interesting thing you’ve done?
JD: I try to do something pretty interesting most weeks and being a Genie granting other people’s wishes allows you to experience a lot of different things but I have to say that flying a fighter jet and almost going the speed of sound and blacking out has to be the most interesting thing I’ve done. But nothing trumps the most satisfying part of my life which is establishing beautiful relationships with beautiful people.
mK: Based on what you’ve observed, what is the toughest challenge a survivor faces?
JD: Staying positive in the face of all the challenges. I’ve watched a lot of people succumb to Cancer and have also seen a lot of people overcome and have noticed that one of the most important aspects of healing is staying positive and having faith every step of the way.
mK: What is your guilty pleasure?
JD: I just had mint chochlate ice cream like 5 minutes before this interview. I’ll keep my other guilty pleasures to myself.
mK: OK, next question… If your favorite restaurant named a menu item (food or drink) after you, what would it be?
JD: Genie Gin and Juice has a nice ring to it don’t you think?
mK: “Laid back…” What are you up to now?
JD: I have a full plate at the moment and live is very exciting. We are in the midst of granting two wish weeks for Cancer survivors in Houston and Jacksonville, an upcoming fundraising event with Deepak Chorpa, and meetings with studios to discuss a reality tv program where we grant 3 life changing wishes in 3 days.
mK: Any advice for people or loved ones that get daunting diagnoses?
JD: Shine as much light on the problem and try to go from fear to love throughout the hurdles you will have to face along the way.
mK: Tell us something about yourself that people probably didn’t know… anything.
JD: I alluded to it above, I have always had a thing for Spiderman ever since I was a child and imagine that I’m him daily.
mK: Hee hee… Any parting words for all the mAss Kickers?
JD: Kick some Cancer Ass!
