Darren Neuburger is another extraordinary mAss Kicker from Canada! We have met so many cool people from “north of the border.” In 2003, Darren was diagnosed with leukemia. During his 2 years in treatment he was an inpatient for the first 5 months, received over 600 chemotherapy treatments, 2 weeks of brain radiation, reverse isolation, and over 34 blood and platelet transfusions! In 2010, Darren published Let’s Talk About It, a book with stories from 40 Young Adults who were diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15 to 45. He is also the host of of an internet radio show every Tuesday on Blog Talk Radio, Let’s Talk About It. We were able the catch up with him and ask him a few questions.
mK: Thanks for doing this Darren! What/ when was your diagnosis? How did you find out about your diagnosis?
DN: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Found out at the E.R. from a visit for my nagging cough
mK: What were your symptoms?
DN: Nagging cough for over 7 months
mK: Why did you decide to become an empowerment coach/ motivational speaker?
DN: I’ve always been the rah rah guy growing up and a leader on all of the sports teams I played on so it’s a natural fit for me. After hearing the words YOU HAVE CANCER at the age of 34 it really hit home that this business of living needs to be FUN yet taken seriously. Today I inspire & Empower thousands of people on that that message – GET BUSY LIVING!
mK: Cool. Who is your hero or heroes?
DN: My dad Bernie
mK: Parents play such a large role in our development! So, what motivates you?
DN: My wife Jaylene, other positive – like minded people in the fight against cancer and most importantly ME because motivation MUST come from within!
mK: When was the first time you felt like yourself after your diagnosis?
DN: Probably 8 months after treatments.
mK: What makes you laugh, cry, angry?
DN: Life makes me laugh & cry and I try very hard not to get angry because it takes away from your time spent being happy!
mK: What would you say is the most interesting thing you’ve done?
DN: I’ve done and I’m doing a lot of cool things but the most interesting was zip lining in mountains over 300-400 ft. gorges because I have a crippling fear of heights…
mK: What was the toughest challenge you faced as a survivor? How did you overcome it?
DN: Initially finding people in my age demographic. I overcame it by finding amazing people on Planet Cancer!
mK: What is your guilty pleasure?
mK: Hee hee… Here’s another question for you… If you could have coffee with any historical figure, what is the one question you would ask him/her?
DN: Martin Luther King Jr.! Too many questions to list just one!!!!
mK: HAHAHA! Way to play coy! j/k! What do you like to do in your spare time?
DN: Be with my wife, golf, network for my business and work out.
mK: What are you up to now?
DN: I am an entrepreneur as I launched Darren Neuberger Empowerment Speaker & Coach and my title is Chief Empowerment Officer.
mK: Any advice for people or loved ones that get daunting diagnoses?
DN: Don’t research it on the Internet! Have somebody with you at your appointments. Stay positive, keep physically active and ask as many questions to your doctor as you want.
mK: Tell us something about yourself that people probably didn’t know… anything.
DN: I shot a 72 ( which is par) in golf last summer, I have done stand up comedy and my second book will be published in 3 weeks.
